Why HR Is Not "Genuinely Confidential" - And Why That's OK.

Sharkey HR Consulting

I recently read an article complaining that HR is not genuinely confidential. No kidding.

Here’s why:

  1. HR doesn’t know what you're going to say. We’re not priests bound by Holy Orders (which is, by the way, not allowed in the workplace). If you say you will hurt someone, HR has to act. It’s the law.

How to spot a good HR professional: If you ask them if a conversation is "confidential," they should immediately say: "OK. Before you say anything further, I can’t promise total confidentiality due to certain laws. However, HR will work to keep your conversation as confidential as practical."

  2. Question anyone whispering secrets. What’s their true intent? Are they spreading rumors or trying to stir up drama (Does anyone watch Survivor)? Some people love to gossip and use a technique called “separation,” where they tell "confidential" info to several people to gain a false sense of power. Please don’t fall for it.

  3. If they had good intentions, they’d go on record. If they genuinely want to solve the problem, they’d work with HR to address it. If you don't trust HR, go to a supervisor you trust.

  4. HR follows privacy laws. But does the CEO/Owner? You may not be the only one who needs to follow the rules—check if everyone in your organization is practicing confidentiality.

  5. Look, they don’t call it a rat race for no reason. People gossip and stir things up in every workplace. But think before you speak when you’re making blanket statements about HR.

Some HR professionals are unethical, sure. But most of us are just trying to make a living and improve the workplace environment. And by the way, employees should stop targeting HR for everything. It’s unfair and unproductive.

In Summary, HR is there to help, not to be the bad guy. If something is a big enough issue to be dealt with, it should be addressed professionally. Before you go throwing accusations around, remember the bigger picture. Confidentiality isn’t always possible, but a good HR pro will work to ensure your issues are handled with care and respect.
